Tengo Project, purveyors of fine pixelated fare, are currently developing the next title in the studio's range of dazzling, modern-day remasters. As announced by publisher Winning Entertainment Group, the studio's next release will be Cybernetic Attack Final Mission, an updated edition of the classic 8-bit shmup Final Mission.
Originally developed by Natsume, Final Mission was released on the Famicom in 1990, before being localised for the U.S. under the somewhat unfortunate moniker of S.C.A.T. Special Cybernetic Attack Team.
Set in the far-flung year of 2029, Final Mission sees New York under attack from intergalactic warlord Vile Malmort. Having already laid waste to several U.S. cities, Malmort has successfully linked his space station to NYC, creating a gateway that will allow his armies to attack the planet. Thanks, Mamdani.
Fortunately, help is at hand in the form of the titular S.C.A.T., comprised of cyborg warriors Arnold and Sigourney. It is up to these human/robot hybrids to take to the skies of The Big Apple, send Malmort's minions packing, and restore peace to New York, America, and presumably the rest of the world.
From a gameplay perspective, Final Mission is reminiscent of Capcom's 1988 release Forgotten Worlds, allowing one or two players to engage in horizontal and vertical scrolling shmup action - fending off an onslaught of enemies with upgradeable weaponry and 8-way orbiting satellites.

Tengo Project's remaster looks set to update the gameplay of the original release while recreating its audio/visual style in a gorgeous retro-futuristic aesthetic. Much like Tengo's remaster of Konami's The Ninja Warriors, Cybernetic Attack Final Mission will feature an expanded cast of playable characters, including the mighty mech monster Titan and the cutesy, jetbike-riding Queen Bee. Alas, it seems that the original, litigation-teasing names of Arnold and Sigourney are no more.
While no date or platforms have been revealed, Winning Entertainment Group has announced that Cybernetic Attack Final Mission will be in attendance at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which kicks off September 17. So hopefully, we'll be hearing more about this exciting new project soon.
