At Gamescom's Opening Night Live, it was announced that Return to Monkey Island will be released on Nintendo Switch and PC on Monday 19th September. In other words, 'International Talk Like A Pirate Day'.

It was a date many in the Monkey Island community had anticipated, with the MixnMojo crew guessing the date correctly after a recent Reddit leak. But the announcement was still worth watching, regardless, for the incredible announcement trailer featuring everyone's favorite salesman, Stan S. Stanman.

In the trailer, Stan goes through a sales pitch, looking at some of the exotic locations that we'll be visiting in the game, before promising a shipment of completely useless horse armor to anyone who pre-orders. This is, of course, a hilarious reference to the now infamous 'Horse Armor' DLC pack for the Xbox 360 release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Return to Monkey Island will mark the return of series creator Ron Gilbert. Gilbert previously directed The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, before leaving LucasArts to form Humungous Entertainment in 1992. In 2008, he then briefly consulted with the team behind the fifth game, Tales of Monkey Island, which was developed at Telltale Games.

In the years following Tales' release, Gilbert spoke publicly on numerous occasions about wanting to do another Monkey Island, which he was finally able to announce, after partnering with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, in April 2022. You can pre-order Return to Monkey Island on the Nintendo store or from Steam, but judging by social media, the pre-order option hasn't yet rolled out to a lot of European countries.
