Capcom vs SNK

When the Capcom vs. SNK project was announced 20 years ago, many within the fighting game community couldn't quite believe it. Two of the one-on-one fighting genre's biggest rivals teaming up? Surely it couldn't happen?

Well, it did – and as a result, we got Capcom vs. SNK, Capcom vs. SNK 2, SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS and SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos. Japan also got the exclusive sequel SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash 2, which you can now play in English thanks to the translation efforts of fans (in case the naming convention is confusing, the titles developed by Capcom were named "Capcom vs. SNK" while those made by SNK reversed the names).

The two firms haven't worked together on another entry in the Capcom vs. SNK series since the 2006 DS Card Fighters sequel – but it would seem there's a hunger for that to change, if SNK producer Yauyuki Oda is to be believed.

Oda is the creative force behind SNK’s recent fighting game revival, and, in an interview with VGC, he has dropped a hint that Capcom vs. SNK 3 could potentially happen.

Asked by VGC if he was personally interested in making another entry in the series, Oda said:

Definitely in the future, that’s something that I think everybody on all sides, in both parties, are interested in making a reality.

Especially after we saw the reaction to the [Evo posters]… it helped us reconfirm that that is probably one of the most wanted things from the fighting game community across the entire world.

We haven’t really talked in detail with anybody at Capcom about it. It might have come up as a vague comment. However, we have a lot of experience [in crossovers] with things like Akuma and Geese in Tekken, Terry [Bogard] in Fighting EX Layer, Terry in Smash Bros., and Baiken in Samurai Showdown...

But recently, we haven’t actually done anything with Capcom, even on character collaboration stuff. So that poster [at Evo], in our sense, was the first step towards maybe something like that happening in the future.

The posters Oda mentions were produced for EVO 2022, and were drawn by the legendary illustrators Eisuke Ogura and Shinkiro.

Would you be keen to see another entry in this crossover franchise? Let us know with a comment.
